How many 1-foot square border tiles are needed to put a two-tile-wide border around a pool that is 12×30?

You can determine the number of tiles required on each side, and then add in the corners. For a pool 12×30, you have two sides that are 12 tiles long and two sides that are 30 tiles long. Remember, each side is two tiles wide (because two tiles is two feet). So the four sides is 2×12+2×12+2×30+2×30, which is 168 tiles. We also need to add in the corners, which will each be two tiles by two tiles (or four) and there are four of them. So we add 16 to 168 and get:
184 tiles
