How to make cement stick to wood for verticle wall art?
I want to make an art piece as a wall hanging. Using a 4′ x 6′ sheet of plywood – I want to adhere cement to the plywood and then place items in the cement (ie broken bits of glass, small rocks, shells etc.) – like a collage or mosaic. Will the cement adhere to the plywood or do I need to use a special technique? This will be hanging outside on my deck so weather and temperatures could be and issue too. Ideas and advice appreciated.
If this is going to hang outside it will be subjected to all sorts of weather conditions. First off plywood is not a good choice. If you have to use it you’ll have to seal it with an oil-based primer and possibly a second finish coat. I would consider a piece of tile backer board with a mesh facing to allow the cement to adhere. Drill a few holes in the backer-board and use wire ties to hold the mesh in place and apply your cement. This piece is going to be heavy and your next problem is going to be how to mount it.
