A cabinet scraper is little more than a flat, rectangular-shaped piece of high carbon steel. Usually no more than 0.6 or 0.8 millimetres thick, scrapers come in a few sizes and are typically five or six inches in length. The working end of the scraper is its long edge. The tool must have a burnished or rounded long edge, creating what’s known as a burr, in order to be useful. The burr is nearly impossible to see since it is only 0.05 millimetres or less high. Scrapers don’t come with a burr, so you will have to prepare them after purchase. It only requires a few tools, and it is quite easy.
Before you can make a new burr on an existing scraper, you need to file off the old burr. Skip this step if you have purchased your scraper new. To take off the old burr, place the scraper upright in a vice and run the file along each side over the burr. Since the narrow edge was rounded slightly the last time you made a burr, flatten it out again. You can use a file for this, too. Finally, take a burnishing tool, which is made from very hard carbon steel, and push it hard against the steel edge, running it along the length of the scraper. A wave-like hook or burr will result from this motion, along with a slightly rounded narrow edge.
Always use cabinet scrapers with the grain of the wood to prevent any gouges in the surface. Scraper edges lose their burr and get dull after about ten minutes of use, so you’ll have to sharpen them frequently. When scraping only produces dust, not shavings, it is necessary to smooth out the edge and reform the burr.
