Most of the clothing you will find at a consignment shop will be sized for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and young children up to about age seven. You can find soft, cuddly blankets for your baby, toys, pajamas and more. Some of the time you will even find brand new clothing that still has a tag attached.
Buy Winter Gear For Less
For children who live in colder climes, winter gear is one expensive necessity you can count on buying every year. Each child’s complete winter outfit usually consists of a snow hat or face mask, blue, red, pink or brown boots, matching gloves and a cozy warm coat. All of this can cost upwards of $100 per child per season. Shop for winter gear at a thrift store and spend less than $25.
Baby Furniture Galore
Cribs, strollers and baby carriers are also plentiful at most children’s consignment stores. A word of caution when purchasing a crib for your baby. Be sure that the slats are no more than 2-3/8 inches apart. New cribs conform to this standard, but some older cribs do not. Take your tape measure and do not buy a crib, no matter how much of a deal it seems to be, that fails to meet this standard. This could be a life or death decision and your baby is counting on you to do the right thing.
Clothing For The Pre-Teen Set
Shirts for girls and boys, as well as jeans are easy finds at consignment stores. Most stores carry clothing up to a child’s size 12 or 14 (US). The larger sizes are more difficult to find because children in middle-to-late childhood tend to wear the clothing out before they outgrow it. What you do find may not be the latest styles, but probably will not be that out of date. You may even get lucky and find popular pre-teen celebrities and singers that your son or daughter will be very glad to show off at school.

Shopping at a second-hand, thrift or consignment store will definitely stretch your budget and provide your baby or child with top-quality clothing that will last. The best part is that you can sell the clothing back to the consignment shop after your child has outgrown it, which will help you pay for the next size clothing. You cannot do that at a department store.
