Bolt cutters, also called bolt croppers, are the tool of choice when you need to cut through solid steel surfaces such as padlocks, bolts, chains and wire. Although they are quite simple by design, they can generate over two tonnes of cutting force while giving the user plenty of leverage. Handymen, do-it-yourselfers, mechanics, law enforcement personnel and others all benefit from keeping a pair of bolt cutters in their toolbox.

Bolt croppers feature two handles of varying length, both of which are attached to blades at a pivot point. As the operator pulls the handles apart, the pivots attached to the blade move inward towards each other. This pulling-apart motion also moves the blades apart. Bring the handles back together, and the pivots straighten out again and move apart from each other, bringing the blades together backed by a considerable amount of force. Not much force is needed to pull the handles apart and bring them back together, while the force generated by the lever can be 4,000 pounds or greater.
Angle cut, centre cut, shear cut and clipper cut varieties are common types of cutters. Forming a V-shaped to easily fit against a bolt or other piece of metal, the angle-cut type features blades that fan out from each other. 25 to 35 degrees is typically the maximum angle size formed by the V. The centre cut type features blades equidistant from each other. The clipper-cut tool features blades that rest flush against a surface so you can come at a bolt from the top down, while shear cutters feature inverted blades like scissors.
Handle designs vary from tool to tool, but all types feature blades made of very strong steel. Tubular handles made of solid or drop-forged steel are very common, and they usually have some kind of anti-slip rubber grip. Lighter fiberglass handles are a feature of some cutters. The advantage with this type besides weighing less is they are non-conductive, so cutting live electrical wire can be done in certain situations.
The tool’s total length in part determines the amount of cutting force it generates. Bolt cutters are available from 12 inches up to 42 inches at various lengths between. Longer-handled cutters more easily cut through the thickest materials. Depending on the purpose, bolt cutters of one size or another provide all of the force you need to cut through just about anything their blades can get a bite on.
