Cutting Glass Tiles, Advice and information
Glass tiles are a popular material for use in both bathroom s and kitchens and can create beautiful designs in swimming pool areas where elaborate or more subtle designs can be created.
Glass tiles installed in bathrooms and kitchens can either be done independently or you can employ a professional to carry out the installation for you. Many home owners prefer to have the job done professionally because cutting glass tiles can sometimes be a little tricky because it is a material that will break more easily.
If you are intending to carry out the job yourself then you absolutely have to have the correct tools and safety wear before you embark on any job to ensure it is carried out safely and the finished product is one you are happy with.
There are different varieties of Glass tiles and you may be installing lose Glass tiles or Glass tiles that are mounted on a sheet and the installation guides will differ.
All surfaces need to be prepared before you begin the process of installing your glass tiles. All surfaces have to absolutely perfect in order to begin tiling on and they should be clean, dry, even and not contain any moisture. It is important to establish the area your tiles are being installed and whether that area is likely to be subjected to wet and moisture. Shower areas, bath areas and backsplash areas are all places where the tiles are likely to become wet and it is advised that a waterproof membrane is used.
Cutting glass tiles can be dangerous and it is vitally important to use all safety wear before you begin to cut any of your glass tiles. A wet saw is one tool that can be used to cut glass tiles but all manufacturers’ guidelines have to be followed, especially when working with water and electricity.
Hand Tile cutters specifically designed for Glass tiles can also be used for cutting Glass but always invest in a good cutter and get as much advice as you can before you select the right one. Investing in a good glass tile cutter is really important to carry out the job safely and successfully.
A glass mosaic tile cutter can also be used which is ideal for cutting smaller pieces of tile, the Mosaic Glass cutter’s blades are shaped like wheels and are small but for cutting larger pieces of glass tiles, the wet saw is recommended.
Working with Glass tiles is not always easy and if this is your first job it may be a good idea to select a small area to tile such as a backsplash area or shower area where you can practice and build confidence before you take on any more challenging tasks.
