No More Wii Accidents With Help From Gorilla Glass
Video gamers learn about Wii damages involving TV glass, and now there’s a company that thinks they have a solution. The Associated Press reports that mega-strong Gorilla glass, which was originally invented in 1962 and known as Chemcor, could become a multibillion-dollar boon for Corning, Inc. Soon, Corning will use Gorilla glass in high-end TVs and touch-screen tablets.
Gorilla glass first roared two years ago
After decades of nothing, Corning began to use Gorilla glass in cell phones in 2008. What started then as a $ 170 million annual business will surely explode once flat screen TVs and touch-screen devices take on Gorilla glass. Also appealing to the high-end flat screen TV clientele would be the possibilities of a Gorilla glass frameless flat screen. It would be tough enough to stay together, yet look more like art than an appliance. Gorilla glass’ resistance to scratching, denting or other breakage would both preserve a high-end television’s elegance and cut down on broken glass from dreaded Wii accidents.
Triple strength, half thickness
AP reports that Gorilla glass beats ordinary LCD display glass hands down. It is 3 times as strong – like a gorilla – but it’s less than half as thick. Thanks to the less-than-a-dime thickness, it’s quite light in weight. Corning is preparing with Asian TV manufacturers to get the Gorilla glass out there by the beginning of 2011. Corning stock prices are already on the way up, anticipating the boom. Corning’s TV glass sales amounted to $ 5.4 billion last year, and Gorilla glass will take than number through the roof in 2011, experts predict. Adding Gorilla glass to TVs is forecasted to add only $ 30 to $ 60 per unit.
Why stop at TV screens?
Corning has its eye on numerous Gorilla glass uses. For instance, refrigerator doors, car sunroofs and stationary touch-screen interfaces are all possibilities. Yet with the television market alone, Corning would likely make a killing with Gorilla glass.
