Handling Electricity Safely
Electricity has plenty of uses in the house, and many appliances employ electricity to run.
As a necessity therefore, enhanced knowledge of electrical dangers are necessary, particularly to children who usually use electricity to study, for amusement, or power electronic gadgets and are unaware of the accompanying hazards.
Kids operate computers and their peripherals, such as external sound system, printers, and cameras, power up tv, or plug their electricity-powered toys to outlets, and they might do so unsupervised.
Commonly, the danger of overloading exists by using simultaneously of these gadgets on a single circuit. Also, the hazard of loose contacts leading to heating up is increased with the constant plugging in and out of these gadgets at the outlets. These all are possible fire hazards
Extra cables might be required for other gadgets to obtain power; thus, kids are open to stray wires that they might use wrongfully or might continue plugged even when not in use, creating risks of electric shock.
To prevent electrical accidents from happening to kids, it is imperative that adequate measures be implemented at home.
Limit the provision of outlets that children can reach. Additionally, install covers in outlets to prevent children from accidentally plugging objects into them. Keep extension wires inaccessible by them, and make sure of adequate fuse or circuit-breaker capacity to ensure that power source is automatically interrupted in case of a fault.
Set up graphic safety signages where necessary to inform children. These hazards signs should emphatically display in pictures the dangers of electricity.
Make sure that your electrical wirings are done by competent personnel only and let them be periodically inspected for deterioration or loose connection.
Children should be taught how to use electricity safely, and do not permit them to use electrical gadgets while wet or standing on wet floor.
As with all other accidents, electricity-caused accidents could be prevented. Continuous electrical-safety education must be imparted them to let them know and appreciate the dangers of electricity.
Because children are very prone to these dangers due to their ignorance, especially because electrical hazards are chiefly unseen, extra caution must be observed in the house, also the tagging of critical outlets with appropriate warning signs that kids can easily realize, to reduce their access to electricity source without depriving them from their electricity-run activities.
