Dermatology Focus: Warts

Dermatology is the study of the skin and its various health conditions; warts are one of those conditions that affect the skin and have been studied to fully understand their existence along with possible cures. The wart itself is visibly seen on the outer layer of the skin and is caused by a virus. What most people don’t know is that the wart is in fact a benign tumor on the epidermis. HPV or human pappilomavirus is a DNA virus with two strands that is found in the bottom layer of the epidermis; it replicates and forms what is observed as being another layer of skin. There are several types of HPV with different symptoms and complications – one of which is linked with cervical cancer.

Warts are quite a common skin problem, but one which has more than its fair share of myths! Those who study dermatology Augusta can help the general public to decipher through facts and myths. A good one to bring up is the belief that warts have roots – an unsightly thought that is a misconception; warts do not have roots and only grow in the skins outer layer, the epidermis.

Although most warts are not painful, they can cause further problems to our health and they are in any case ugly to look at! They protrude from the skin like cylinders – some fused together at various layers, whilst others not so. This fact depends on where on the body the wart is located and how thick the skin is. If for example, the wart was on the underside of the foot (common is just below the toes) it would take on a mosaic appearance due to fusion of the layers. Some warts have black dots which are simply small blood vessels that have lost their blood flow.

Warts are quite common is all their different sub-types and all humans can pick up the virus that causes warts – just by coming in contact with another. Some warts can be gone as quick as they came, perhaps clearing up with a few weeks; others can take years until they are fully gone. It is thought that the speed in which a wart clears and a human’s susceptibility at contracting warts depends largely on the their immune system. Those who have immune diseases such as AIDS, may have to wait longer until the wart has gone.

In Augusta Dermatologist, knowing of possible and proven treatments for warts is just as important as understanding its cause. In most cases, warts can be treated with an over the counter medication as prescribed by the family doctor. One of the most prescribed treatments is salicylic acid that must be applied to the wart on a daily basis. Along with this treatment, it is advised to use a pumice stone to take away the layers of the wart; following this, the area is cleaned and a fresh layer of salicylic acid applied.

Cryotherapy or ‘freezing’ is also used in the treatment of warts and as part of the study of dermatology August. This treatment uses liquid nitrogen which literally freezes the cells within the wart and kills them. This doesn’t kill the virus, which is then released back into the skin’s tissue and eliminated by the bodies immune system.
