Whether you are framing a roof or making a toy box squares and bevels ensure that you create edges that are square and angles that are accurate. Any shop should be equipped with a variety of squares for making different edges as well as a beveling tool that allows you to mark precise angles.
A try square is the most basic type of square. This tool features two basic parts: a wooden, rectangular handle and a metal blade positioned at 90 degrees to the handle and set into the wood down the center of the short side. Because the handle needs to be warp resistant, a common used is rosewood for its hardness and density. Likewise, the blade consists of hardened, tempered steel. Durable, aesthetically pleasing brass rivets are often used to affix the blade to the handle. The try square is used to check stock that has been planed, making sure it is square along the edges and true along the broad surfaces. Try squares usually range from three to twelve inches in length (blade).
Another important square is a dovetail square, although this tool is not for checking 90-degree corners, but for making precise dovetail joints. The dovetail joint is an ancient technique used to secure corners of boxes, cabinets and drawers and add strength. The same durable construction materials used in the making of try squares are used for dovetail squares. The angle of the dovetail square is measured in a slope and is usually 1:6 or 1:8. The correct angle to use for a project depends on the work.
Other squares include combo squares that consist of a ruler-like piece of steel with a moveable device attached. This tool lets you quickly check 45- and 90-degree angles with accuracy, among other things. When working with large geometrical areas, carpenters used large, L-shaped framing squares.
A beveling tool is a multi-angle square, featuring a rosewood or hardwood handle and an adjustable metal blade that is tightened into place with a wing nut. This carpentry tool is very versatile, as it can be used to mark virtually any angle up to 180 degrees. Multi-angle beveling tools are available with blades nine and twelve inches in length.
