A watercolor is the medium or the finishing artwork, in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water soluble vehicle. The traditional and most typical assistance for watercolor paintings is paper; other supports include papyrus, bark papers, plastics, vellum or leather, fabric, wood, and canvas.

LA Painting Lessons involve the most basic watercolor technique called flat wash. It is produced by initial wetting the region of paper to be wrapped by the wash, then blending adequate pigment to easily fill the entire region. The pigment is put on to a sloping surface in somewhat overlapping horizontal bands from the top down. Once finished, the wash needs to be left to dry and even itself out, don’t be lured to work back to a drying wash, and the results are often disastrous! A variation on the basic wash is the graded wash. This method demands the pigment to become diluted a bit with more water for each horizontal stroke. The effect is a wash which dies out steadily and evenly. Similar watercolor technique to a wash is Glazing, but works with a thin, transparent pigment used over dry existing washes. The goal is to adjust the color and tone of the underlying wash. Non staining, clear pigments such as Rose Madder Cobalt Blue and Auroline are ideal for glazing because they can be employed layer after layer to accomplish the desired effect. Be sure each layer is completely dry before applying the next.
