How To Drill Holes Through Glass
A layman with the proper tools and a little patience can do drilling a hole in glass. The first thing to consider is what type of glass to use. Do not use tempered glass or safety glass, for these require special tools.
Diamond core bits are better than carbide bits for proper drilling as carbide bits gets dull after one hole. Round headed diamond bits are suitable for smaller holes and hollow core diamond bits for bigger holes and they come in different grits.
Fine grit is equivalent to 200 sandpaper, medium is 120 sandpaper, coarse is 95 sandpaper, and super course is 75 sandpaper. For general use the coarser grits will work fine. If used correctly, these will not dull, and will give you plenty of use over the long run. Have the shop cut your glass as close to size as they can. The less you have to do at the job site, the better the odds are, and you will have no breaks.
The cutting area must be completely flat and spotless. You can use a piece of carpet or Styrofoam under your glass for better protection. The drill press provides an accurate and steady surface. If a press is not available try your Dremel or your favorite drill. Slow and steady wins the race in drilling glass. To keep your bit on its mark use a 1/8”-1/4” thick wooden template above your hole. Mark holes with permanent marker at least 3/4in. away from the sides and corners of the glass.
This kind of job necessarily needs lubricants. The bit and the glass should be kept cool using water, kerosene or oil. A little well can be made around the hole by making use of clay or putty to hold the lubricant. You can start your drill at 600-900 RPM and increase the pressure on it gradually. If the color of the bit starts changing, then slow down your pace.
After cutting 3/4 of the glass with an increased speed of 2500 to 5000 RPM, you can turn the glass over and start cutting from the other side to avoid the glass being chipped at the bottom. If you notice any smoke in the dill bit, do not rush to cut the glass but slow down.
