Stained Glass Grinder Buying Guide

A stained glass grinder is a very useful tool for shaping a glass piece into a desirable shape without putting in too much effort and time. Stained Glass Craft is like a puzzle made of pieces placed together to create a form of an art or masterpiece. If assembled properly, the final output will reflect an attractive whole piece.

The diamond coated bit functions by grinding off the unwanted shape from your glass piece, the glass shaped glass should then be prepared for copper foiling. There are basically two types of grinder bits, the so called Large Bit are meant for grinding large pieces of glass. And the Small Bit is respectively for small pieces.

There are some artists who can complete projects without using a stained glass grinder while most artists consider grinders as highly essential tools in most of their project activities. Especially for professionals of course who do not want to sacrifice the quality of their projects and time.

In the stained glass industry it is easy to buy and sell a glass grinder. So you can always decide to sell your grinder in case you want to change your hobby. Lampworkers even find a great use of glass grinders.

To know which grinder to buy, assess your needs and set a budget. If you will only be doing glass projects as a hobby, then look for models that are designed for hobbyists.  Budget grinders start from $100 – $150, although there are some grinders that cost below $100. These types of grinders are ideal for starters or those that only wants a few projects in a year. Mid-priced grinders cost from $100-$500 that can be the best tool for professionals or advanced artists. Some of these are the Wizard IV, the G-8 Glastar All Stars and the G-9 disc grinders.

However there are grinders that are so expensive, but the features and accessories can explain why. Those who need these types of grinders are the very serious artists or companies that have their name on this type of industry.

When assessing a stained glass grinder, check the essential qualities. This include the RPM, the toqrue, the size of the surface, the features and of course the price and the warranty.

The RPM of the Bit is a very essential factor, the higher the value the better performance you will get. The Torque, explains the resistance. Torques under 20 are good for those who will use the grinder few times a month. While torques 20 to 29 are meant for hobbyists and professional artists. Torques above 29 are for serious artists and professionals as well. Look out for price if they are worth the features. The size of the surface and the extra features are also important.

The Wiz CG by Inland is one of the top selling machines in the market most loved by hobbyists. It features a great RPM at 3500 and a torque at 30, costing you not more than $100. You may have heard of the Wizling CG, but it is not equal to the Inland Wiz CG. You can buy a Gryphette if you want something around $75.

If you need something better than Wiz CG, you can go for the Wizard IV that cost about $160 or may even be lower. It features a 3,550 RPM and torque value of 40. This product comes with a drawer and second level work surface. This machine is most loved by professional artists.

For something higher than the Wiz CG, choose a G-8 All Star that costs $175 or slightly higher. It features RPM of 3650 and a whopping torque of 42.
